Antojitos Citywalk

February 18, 2014 at 1:17 PM

The new Antojitos restaurant at universal studios citywalk

Our goal was to simply sit down at the bar, taste a few signature drinks, try a few apps and feel in the whole concept as the hyped up marketing this place has done makes it and compare to be the cava from Mexico pavilion in epcot.

Maybe it’s just all the press out there who get a free meal to attend and state that Antojitos is the new Mexican spot in Orlando out beating the restaurant Roccos and that its new tequila bar out beating La Cava from Epcot.... But then I read the restaurants description from the Universal sites it self and it was clear that this had to be an intention to be the new spot..https://www.universalorlando.com/Restaurants/CityWalk/Antojitos-Authentic-Mexican-Food.aspx  In this page it says “authentic bar menu will make you feel like you just discovered a hidden gem that only locals know about" A hidden gem that ONLY locals know about.. REALLY? First of all if you want it to be a hidden gem don’t advertise your own product as a hidden gem. As we all know a hidden gem is a hidden spot (maybe hidden in citywalk cause people don’t visit this as a destination anymore but a bite to eat after the parks place) that grows to be a gem by its food, atmosphere people and its own identity. Clearly a wanna be La Cava spot with its ingredients to success.

Also, below this they also mention "at Antojitos, you won’t find piles of bland refried beans, chewy rice, and the same three ingredients wrapped in different types of tortillas" Another REALLY?  If you’re going for traditional food stay traditional, if you want to create a Mexican fusion and new go with that concept but it’s the same food as most Mexican restaurants with a few additional items such as corn (eskites) and tamales.. Everything else is the same.. Tacos, enchiladas, chicken and shrimp dishes, fajitas, chimichanga and buritos.. Please note that is are the same items but just in other types of preparations.. Clearly what they are stating is not true..

Here is a link to the menu in case you need to verify my statements..https://www.universalorlando.com/Images/Antojitos%20Menu%20DOWNSTAIRS_tcm13-44131.pdf

Don’t get me wrong, the quality of the food is the ONLY thing they got going here however not where it needs to be for a Universal Citywalk Mexican restaurant.. Once you see the portions and prices you will also find out this may not be your place. Unless of course they are giving you the food for free to write about it.

From the outside this place this place is making it feel like it’s a traditional Mexican spot as the outside is an old Mexican hacienda style of building but when you walk inside you feel you just got teleported to a new era.. Did not realize this was one of those preshow they give you at Universal. The inside look and feel from what I gathered from my research was done by the vice president of city walk Modesto alcala who’s rumor is among city walk employees is fixated on using his favorite color from his red Maserati car (HINT, NEW BRICK OVEN PIZZA), is meant to be an eclectic place however I found it to be like the jetsons Latin cafeteria. Not sure if the goal was to make this a family place or to scare the kids away. While I understand it and somewhat like the corps of the dolls along in the hallways not sure if this the right spot for this but may work in your Orlando downtown club scene. Is it a Halloween horror nights season theme?

So in summary this place has nothing to do with a Mexican restaurant but some random guess at ideas and see if they stick up all mashed up together. Not sure this decor has anything to do with Mexican culture, Mexican feel and Mexican eclectic scene.. Not because you put a Mexican graffiti from LA, a huge wrestling mask in the rood and Mexican food, serve tequila,  a sign that says NACHOS (very eclectic and original) does this place deserve to be called Mexican.

Also, who thought of the uniform?. All the staff wears jeans and a white guyabera.. It’s a horrible combination. So it’s an eclectic place with a Cuban guayabera and blue jeans.. Have you seen the jean jackets? Someone messed up really bad here... Heard it was the mastermind Modesto but I also heard they quickly realized this and are working on a new uniform.. Universal, Ill give you a great piece of advice... Stick to your themes and do NOT confuse your guests..

One more also, THE MUSIC.. for me, the music is everything as it sets the tone and atmosphere for the place.. While we are sitting down I did not hear any Latin music (ANY) while I understand you need to keep some different types of music to entertain all your tourist. At one point it was led Zeppelin which I LOVE and towards to end of our extremely bad visit was lounge music.. Really NYC lounge music in a Mexican restaurant.... I’ll give you the advice once again.. Stick to your theme, whatever that may be...

Back to our quick visit... The quality of the food is not bad however I did find it pricy for the small portions....

Now the drinks... Again.. who ever created these drinks either does not drink or did not fully train your staff correctly.. While I tend to stay with traditional margaritas we had to return our margaritas 2..  If the menu would have said Nyquil margaritas I would have passed cause I don’t like Nyquil especially if not sick and out drinking socially and would have ordered something else however the 2 margaritas we ordered were almost rest assure served with this.. I’m sure they didn’t however it tasted as if they might as well served that and saved them some liquor cost. We ended up sticking with Mexican beer.

Now there is also a different concept on the second floor. my thought was, get a first floor concept right and then I’ll bother to go up to the second floor.

While more than anyone else I understand how hard it is to run and create a place like this and my comments may be a bit harsh, but there is just simply no excuses. You have all the resources and money to your disposal to create a unique concept but not even then could this be accordingly. To put a place in City walk and having all the tools in the world I simply expected the so much more than this and you had all the tools to make it THE SPOT however it looks and feels like the spot in Tijuana Mexico and not Orlando Universal City walk.

My advice is stop copying other venues and create your own real Mexican concept. A stop to Mexico city, Veracruz, Guadalajara, Los Angeles (northern Mexico.. LOL) will help you ALOT..

Since I do love Mexican food, I’m sure I will stop by again and hopes you have figured all this out, as we all know there is always a learning curve. However being Universal City walk Id hope you learned all the curves by now but clearly this was not the case Mr. Antojitos...

Whats next citywalk a place called Eifel tower's?

Salud compadres!!
